So Lauryn Hill has been in the media lately about how she needed to make more music in order to pay the IRS so she wouldn’t go to jail. Well, today she released on her Tumblr her new song, Neurotic Society with the following statement
Hello All: Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked! – MLH
Well that says it all. She doesn’t want to put this out but has no choice. I don’t know about y’all, but I don’t like it. You can tell when making music if you’re fueled by inspiration or financial obligation and this was straight financial. I was a huge fan of her Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album (which was 15 years ago, by the way) and after hearing this, I can’t say I’m with her anymore. I can barely hear the lyrics because of all the crap going on in the background. Some people on iTunes are calling it genius and brilliant and saying that real hip-hop is back. I can honestly say that I hate it. Let this be a lesson to y’all to PAY YOUR TAXES!!!
