I hear this question regularly. Whenever I’m in a setting where I’m meeting people for the first time, I would barely speak to people unless someone initiated the conversation.
When I’m asked that question, I normally just laugh (awkwardly of course) and just shrug.

How am I supposed to answer that?
Q: Why are you so quiet?
A: Cause I’m a hermit crab and would like to crawl under this table than speak to people.

Ok, that probably wouldn’t be my answer, but I’m sure you get the point.

My honest answer would be because I don’t want to say the wrong thing or be the person that can’t shut up. I find those people annoying, so why would I be something I don’t like?

I’m doing my best to talk a little more, but seeing as I’m going into a new job and I’m “fresh meat,” I might retreat back into my protective shell with my business.
